Weekend in Review: Hodge Podge

Another weekend come and gone...

This weekend was a longer since I called in sick on Thursday.  I had just been feeling off for a week and combined with some other stuff I just felt like a day off might be what I needed to snap me out of the funk I was so obviously in.  Reporting to you on Wednesday (nearly a week later) I am feeling much more myself!

I didn't do a whole lot on Thursday and I told myself that was ok... that I was home just to relax... so that's what I did.

Fridays have seemed to turn into a sister day of sorts.  You might remember that a couple of weeks ago Lindsey and I went thrift store shopping.  On Friday this time we went to lunch at one of our favorite Thai places - King and I.  It was great because they have a lunch special we didn't even know about which made things even better!

After lunch we ended up going to Michaels together.  I was going to go there after I dropped her back off at the house, but turns out she needed to go there as well.  So craft store we went!  She had to get some picture frames for some paintings the apes did for her at the zoo.  I needed to go to get supplies to complete the baby book I made for Susan.  It was fun hanging out - as always!!

That afternoon I went back to my house and cleaned.  I also started to work on the baby book.  I made her a baby book the last time she was pregnant. (As a side note I totally looking for that entry so I could remember some about how I did it last time and of course I couldn't find it!!  Now I located the entry, and it did have some valuable information in there I would have appreciated... like using glue squares instead of a glue stick... that would have made things soooo much easier!!)  It worked pretty well - it's nice the PowerPoint file was already complete so I just had to do some tweaking and print it out.  I ended up completing the book by Sunday evening.  I forgot to take a picture, but maybe Susan will... if not, it looks pretty much like the one in the link above.  I gave it to her yesterday and she loved it :).  She requested me to make one (before she knew I made the baby blanket) and since it's so easy and meant so much I of course said yes :)

Anyway... back to the weekend... On Friday night Dan and I went over to Dave's house.  This seems to be becoming a bit of a weekly thing.  It was fun... we played a little poker... good times.

On Saturday I hung out with my mom and sister most of the day.  We first went to Vintage Market Days.  I had bought a LivingSocial deal for it - but didn't really know what it was.  It ended up being like a bunch of different antique mall booths... kinda... there was also some crafts.  There was a lot of furniture... furniture I really liked but just is out of my price range at the moment... plus not really having a way of hauling the furniture... but it was fun to look!

We then headed out to visit my grandma and aunt.  We went to lunch and then impromptu-ly went second hand shop browsing.  You can read about things I got in my last post.  I really enjoyed spending the time with the girls.

After our adventure I came home and there were people at my house.  Dan was making ribs and they were delicious.  We hung out at the house for awhile, but ended up going over to Andy's for a bit.  I headed home on the early side, but whatever.

On Sunday it was a relaxing day.  I made some chili and went grocery shopping.  Mostly I just relaxed though and worked on the baby book.  Sunday night we rented a Redbox movie - Identity Thief (it was ok) and went to bed.  Nice weekend indeed.

My New (old) Things

This past weekend we did some second hand store shopping.  Mostly I am on the look out for some chairs.  A few weeks ago I was browsing a blog and she did this awesome dining room update (look here) with different chairs she found over town for cheap and repainted them with bright fun colors.

I saw the pic and fell in love immediately.  That picture screamed to me - this is what you should do in your dining room.  So the mission was set.  A couple of weekends ago I scored two chairs at Value Village.  I haven't taken pictures of them yet... but I need to.  I want to end up with at least six chairs so I was one third of the way there (if you don't count the table which I also don't have...)

This past weekend we were on the lookout for some more chairs.  I'm looking for solid (not flimsy), wooden chairs without a cushion (so if anyone sees one for cheap let me know or buy it and I'll pay you back!).  I have been able to find some chairs but they are usually in poor shape structurally or being sold as a set (which I would like to get different ones - 'Friends' it if you will).  I'm excited for the hunt!

We went to a couple of shops and our last stop of the day we found one chair that I think will work for the dining room.  It has arms where my other two don't, but I figure this can be an end seat.  They are usually bigger than the other chairs.  So I'm down to needing just three more chairs!
Aint she a beaut!?
While that picture above show lots of different colored chairs, right now I'm thinking about painting all the chairs different shades of blue.  Or possibly all of them navy... I'm just not sure what I'll end up doing but I don't think it will be all loud colors.  I'm really excited to get to this project, but I'll also need to find a dining room table.  And I think ideally it would seat 8 if need be... so might actually need 5 more chairs instead of just three.

But that's not all I got this weekend.  While we were in our first store stop (we went to a festival thing earlier in the day which I'll tell you more about in my typical weekend recap) I found something else I've been keeping a casual eye out for... sconces!!  I had an idea that they could look good hanging on either side over the archway cutouts.  Most of the sconces I had been seeing at second hand shops were cheap feeling (and looking).  Nothing had really caught my eye yet.  Then we were standing in this shop and my aunt (or sister I can't remember) pointed them out to me... and they were awesome looking and for only $10 I fell in love pretty darn quickly.
Sorry the pic is the wrong way
This beauties will be painted some color and hang on the dining room side of the archways.  I think it will depend on what color the chairs end up being... right now I've thought that black might look good or a charcoal.  But I've also pictures them a fun color like red or teal.  We'll see but I'm really super excited about them.

All these colors I'm day dreaming about and right now there's a khaki neutral on three of the walls and a red accent wall (on the wall with the doorway and the arch cutouts).  I'm thinking that in this day dream of a world that wall would probably need to change colors.  I guess will all come together.  I want to get some more chairs and a table and stuff before I jump to painting anything... but I'm way excited about the sconces.

After that store we went to another store my aunt found.  I think each of us ended up getting something from that place.  My sister got an awesome peace sign painting.  We also got some Christmas presents too for people.

I ended up getting this $12 chair.  No, it doesn't fit into my dining room project, but it's a solid, comfortable chair that was cheap... so why not.

The colors are kinda fun too
It's a bit on the taller side (I know with the angle you might have a hard time telling).  Until we get a table or something in there I'll have it in the kitchen to sit in if needed.  I like have that option now.

Finally, my aunt got me a little something for my house which was very nice of her.  She got me this vase, which I love because it curves to the side.

It's like a floating window in darkness haha
See that green vase in the center - that's what she got me.  I'm not sure if it will forever live in this window, but for now I'm happy with it there.

So that's my random finds over the weekend.  I love second hand shopping - especially with my family that makes it so much more fun!!

Weekend in Review - All Moved In

Friday morning I treated myself to some Steak n Shake breakfast.  I've really been trying to cut down on eating out (I was getting fast food breakfast about 2-4 times a week...) so I've been doing real good about not eating out in the morning I went and got the best fast food breakfast.  And it was delicious.

I spent the first part of Friday just relaxing... and it was so nice.  That afternoon I went over to my mom's house to finish cleaning up over there.  I had some stuff that didn't fit in the first trip and some clothes still in my closest.  I also had WAY more under my bed than I thought.  I wanted to get everything swept up and looking better.  Luckily it didn't take too long and I thought I had left way more than I thought.

I took my stuff back over to my house and unpacked everything.  Then I waited around until Dan came home.  I made him run some errands with me.  First we went to Target.  He needed a new pair of shorts since his last pair had ripped.  We also got a hose and nozzle on clearance.  Woohoo totally needed that for the house!

Our next stop was Home Depot.  We needed to get a door knob for the new door that Dan put up to help keep the cats in the basement.  We also picked up some other random odd and ends including a seal for the bottom of the door and a magnet to help keep one of our cabinet shut (it creeps back open if you don't make sure to get it shut all the way.  The previous owners had Velcro there, but the magnet should work better).

Our final stop was Petco to get new supplies for the cats.  It was like buying all the stuff you have to buy when you first get a pet... so that was somewhat expensive.  I had to get two litter boxes, litter, litter catching mat, food and a litter genie.  This is something I saw a TV commercial for awhile back and researched online.  It got a lot of good reviews.  It's basically something that you keep near the litter boxes for easy waste disposal.  The system keeps all those nasty smells locked inside.  Makes it easier to clean to boxes each day.  I've been using it a couple of days now and I'm pretty happy with it.

After we got home with all the purchases we got ready and went over to my cousin Dave's house.  Andy, Dave, and Caleb were already there.  Caleb made some amazing cheeseburgers (with bacon and Gouda) and we had some hot dogs.  It was a pretty relaxing night.

Saturday morning I got up and started to set up the cats items downstairs.  I originally thought I would put them in the bathroom.  But it just didn't feel right.  I then moved them over to the laundry room... which also didn't feel right.  So they ended up in the storage closet.  I'm happy with this set up, although I need to organize that room and make it more plush for the kitties.

After setting all that up I headed over to meet my dad for breakfast at Bread Company.  Then we headed out to pick up my grandpa.  It was a nice drive out chatting with my dad.  My grandpa gave me a coffee table and a painting.  I'm happy with them and I know that he liked helping me out a bit.

We drove back and got that all unloaded at my place and then I spent some time unpacking some bins and taking a nap... Then we met up with the whole family.  My grandpa wanted to take everyone out to dinner at Cusenelli's.  We had a group of about 15 people.  So it was pretty crazy (and somewhat slow) but nice to spend time with the family.

After dinner we went over to Andy's house to have some drinks and chill out.  It was just what I needed.  I've been in a somewhat cranky mood and just relaxing with a drink really helped mellow me.

Sunday morning I went and got the cats.  Moving the cats was the final thing I had to do to get all my 'stuff' there.  It felt great.  The cats seem to be adjusting pretty well.  They were pretty scared at first being in such a new setting with noises they didn't understand.  But they seem to be getting braver all the time.  Although Stitch keeps hiding under the couch... so I need to figure out how to get her to stop doing that (it's more like she is inside the couch and it's a reclining couch, so it's just a dangerous place for her to be).

I went grocery shopping and that was it for my Sunday.  Overall it was a nice weekend.  I'm bad and didn't get any pictures - hopefully next week (I sound like a broken record).

Fantasy Survivor Blood vs. Water

Can you believe that Survivor starts back up again tomorrow night?  I know I'm excited!!  Survivor is one of my favorite shows on television and the fact that Michelle and I are continuing our fantasy teams... well that just makes it all the better!

I will say that I hope this season isn't jumping the shark.  They are having what I think is a very complicated game this season.  I'm not sure if you are interested - but you can check out all the twists here.  Hopefully once the season starts it will get easier to follow... but who knows!  With any reality show it could just unfold in so many different ways.  Add in all those twists and really it's hard to make decisions about the show.

I've mentioned this before... it's just us doing it so we decide how we are going to pick in the beginning... whatever makes the most sense for the show.  For Survivor this season the premise is Blood vs. Water.  Which means half the people out there are returning players and they each brought a loved one on the show.  They will be separated into two tribes - returning players on one and the loved ones on the other.  However, they are still linked to their loved one as they can 'save' them during redemption island challenges (ugh... redemption island is back and can't say I'm happy about it)  So it's strange... you're still somewhat linked to your loved one BUT they are on opposite tribes.

Knowing all of that we just decided to pick pairs of loved ones.  Is this the best strategy?  Nah, probably not, but whatever, it made sense and we both agreed to it.

She won the rock, paper, scissors match (I think she has me beat on RPS)... Michelle chose Monica and Brad (he was the quarter back on a team she liked back in the day), Vytas and Aras (Aras has previously won Survivor), Laura and Rupert (he's back!), Kat and Hayden (she's dumb and he won Big Brother), and Colton and Caleb (supposedly Colton has changed but we'll see... and apparently Caleb is lovable hmm)

Candice and John (married):  I picked them b/c it was good to have an athletic couple that included a boy and a girl... idk, just a gut pick

Gervase and Marissa (uncle and niece):   He was on the very first season of Survivor.  I remember him being likable and I think that she has a good shot of being good too.

Tyson and Rachel (dating):  I'm not so sure about her... but I've always liked Tyson.  He comes off as a 'villian' but whatever... I enjoy him and I remember him being funny.  Probably won't win, but whatever at least he should be enjoyable to watch.

Katie and Tina (mother and daughter):  Tina won her season (waaaay back on season 2).  She's a likable person, but I'm not really sure how long she will last.

Laura and Ciera (mother and daughter):  Honestly, this is who I was left with since Michelle got to pick first... neither of us wanted to pick them since they are pretty conservative and against gay rights.  But past political views... they just don't feel like a team that can win it in my opinion.  But someone had to get stuck with the bad team right? haha

Overall I can't wait for the season to start!!  I love our reality show picks!!

Weekend in Review - Almost Moved In

This past weekend was pretty low key which was nice.

On Friday I woke up and cleaned up around the house a bit and then met my sister for lunch and some thrift store shopping.  I have an idea for what I'd like to do in the dining room for cheap so we were on the lookout for some chairs.  I was able to score two for about $12 total.  I still need at least four more chairs and a table... but hopefully soon enough I'll have that completed project to share with you.

That night we went over to Caleb and my cousin Dave's house.  We bought some meat (and beans and German potato salad) from Kenricks and grilled.  It was so good.  That place has so much to choose from!

The night was good, but I got kinda tired the later it got.  We got home around midnight and I had to get up at 4:45 to take my mom to the airport.  I was pretty tired driving, but it was nice to get back home and crawl back into bed for a couple more hours.

When I finally got up we met my cousin (with his truck) at my mom's house to get a majority of the stuff moved out.  Of course they moved my bed and I realized I had waaay more stuff hidden under the bed than I remember - whoops.  I didn't get everything moved, but I'm planning on going back over there on Friday to get the room in better shape before my mom gets back from her trip.  I'm also planning on moving the cats this weekend which is a big deal :).

After we got everything moved into the house we went to lunch with Dan, Andy, Caleb, Ashley, Abby, and Ari.  We went to Frankie Gs and it was great.  It was fun going to lunch with everyone and I love that place so the food was pretty dern good too!

We got back to the house and I put away some of the stuff we brought from my mom's and I took a nap.  The getting home late, waking up early, and moving in the heat just tired me out.

That evening we went to the Hispanic Festival at Kiener Plaza with Dan's friend Ryan.  His girlfriend was doing some fashion show or something.  I had a couple of yummy margaritas and part of Dan's burrito.  It was just so hot out.  We've had quite the hot streak lately.  Even though that's what all summer should be like in St. Louis we really lucked out this summer heat wise.  So now that summer feels like it should be over and now it's getting so hot... well that's just annoying!

Sunday was kind of a lazy day.  I did go grocery shopping... so that's something.  I also slowly unpacked some more stuff... but mostly I just lounged on the couch and that was fine by me!

Sorry I don't have any pictures in this post!  How was yalls weekend?

Weekend in Review: Finally a Long Feeling Weekend

Did everyone have a nice Labor Day weekend?  I can't believe it's finally September.  This year has been flying by but August has felt very long.  It's probably because there were essentially 5 weekends in August... and I did something major every weekend.

I know I missed blogging specifically about last weekend... but let me tell you - we moved... haha... not really much to say about it.

On Thursday night we both just relaxed and I made some dinner.  I can't remember if I mentioned this or not but I have a hard time figuring out what to make for dinner.  I just can never think outside of the few items I always make... and I don't know how to meal plan (using the same item in multiple meals to cut down on waste and things to buy).  They were running a LivingSocial deal or something for a 12 month membership to emeals.  This site will give you seven meals recipes and a grocery list.  While we haven't eaten seven meals in a row at home (and can't imagine when we will!) and all seven meals didn't really look good (who wants ham salad sandwiches) I'm really liking having an easy time figuring out what to make and having a variety of stuff to make.  I'm still not through the first grouping of meals, but I'm excited to get home and make tonight's meal - which is totally weird b/c I don't really like to cook.  I hope it continues.  It's just a new way of thinking for me.
Spinach and Tomato Fritatta

On Friday the cable guy came over so we now have TV and Internet.  So happy!  Later that night we went up to Weekends Only and I picked out couches.  I really debated what I wanted to do in the living room furniture wise.
Should I go with a sectional?
Or love seat couch combo?

When it came down to it I realized I couldn't really make a really wrong choice.  The living room is pretty big - so I just went with my gut.  I'm happy with what I picked out, and it's nice to start to see that room come together.

After we did the couch shopping we went by Kenricks and picked up some hot dogs (jalapeno cheddar) and chicken brats (blue cheese).  I think we'll be shopping there more often for our meat products.  They have soooo many different kinds of brats I want to try!  We grilled that night and our friend Caleb came over.

On Saturday I went to breakfast with my dad, Janet and Keith.  Did I mention Keith, my brother, was in town?  It was so good to see him.  We went to Benton Park Cafe.   That place is so good (and popular on Saturday mornings).

I took Keith over to my mom's and I did some errands while Dan picked up the couches.  Then we relaxed a bit before we when to my cousin Dave's housewarming party.  They had a lot of good food.  Dan made his sausage dip and Dave made salad on a stick.  Caleb made burgers and dogs which were really good too.  There was so much good food I had to stop myself from just snacking all night long.

On Sunday I headed over to my mom's house to start packing up my bedroom.  When she got home from work we got pizza - Imos.  I haven't had Imos in forever since Dan isn't a fan of Provel.  It was sooooo good!  Then we headed over to my house to show my grandpa it.  Then we went to Ted Drewes.  I got a pineapple concrete and it was delicious!

We headed back to the house and played board games for awhile.  We love board games and I loved spending that time with my little family.

Sunday night I went back home and hung out with Dan and Caleb again.  They are like BFFs I swear!  We live close together now so it makes it much easier to hang out.

Monday I lounged around the house and did the dishes.  Then we picked up my brother and headed over to my dad's house to celebrate my grandpa's 91st birthday.  That night we hung around the house did some chore type of stuff and finished off the weekend by watching the Roast of James Franco.

All-in-all a great weekend!
